BEACON MUNICIPAL CENTER: EBSTER RECREATION CENTER

Balancing preservation and purpose, the redesigned recreation center integrates a historic corner gym and library with modern amenities. THE ORIGINAL FACADE WAS PRESERVED while introducing a street-level basketball court illuminated by a clerestory roof and lower-level gathering spaces. These downstairs rooms open directly into a private, sheltered courtyard for after-school youth programs. At the historic Ebster entrance, visitors are welcomed by an exhibit honoring the neighborhood's history and the site's legacy as an equalization school.
